What is the IGCSE grading system like? Each IGCSE subject is assessed using grades or scores. The most commonly used systems are the CIE grading system and the Edexcel grading system.
The CIE grading scale ranges from A*, A, B, C, D, E, F, to G.
The Edexcel grading system uses numerical grades from 9 (the highest) down to 1 (the lowest).
For a long period of time, IGCSE results were assessed using a letter grading system, which included grades such as A, A, B, C, D, E, F, G, and U. Among these, A (and A) represented the highest levels of achievement, while U indicated an ungraded or failing result.
The CAIE examination board uses both the A*–G grading scale and the 9–1 grading system.
Edexcel IGCSE adopts the 9–1 grading scale, which is consistent with the grading system used for GCSEs in the UK.
Oxford AQA IGCSE also uses the 9–1 grading system, the same as the UK GCSE examinations.
Depending on the examination board, IGCSE exams are held two to three times a year, typically in January, May–June, and October–November. Results are usually released in March, August, and January of the following year, respectively.
Candidates may choose to take exams in stages or sit all studied subjects in a single examination session. In addition, each subject offers multiple exam opportunities, and the highest result achieved will be used as the final grade.
Students typically sit for the exams at authorized examination centers affiliated with their schools in their respective regions. Private candidates may register directly with the British Council to take the exams (except in the United States and the United Kingdom).
IGCSE answer scripts are sent to the UK within the specified timeframe under strict confidentiality procedures arranged by the schools. The papers are then marked centrally in the UK by appointed examiners from the respective UK examination boards.
IGCSE results are graded on a scale of A, A, B, C, D, E, F, G, and U, where A (or A) represents the highest level of achievement and U indicates an ungraded or failing result. If students are not satisfied with their results in a particular subject, they may choose to retake the exam, and the best result will be counted as the final grade.
