In the IGCSE examinations, some subjects have relatively higher A rates, while others have lower A rates. This may be related to factors such as subject difficulty, syllabus content, and exam format. Below, we take a look at the A* rates of some popular subjects and highlight key points to consider when studying them.
Among language subjects, Malay has the highest A rate at 74.5%. This is followed by Mandarin Chinese (Foreign Language), with 73% of candidates achieving an A. Other languages such as Arabic, Italian, and Sanskrit also have relatively high A rates. In comparison, Chinese as a First Language and French have lower A rates, at 34.2% and 34.6% respectively.
It is worth noting that in IGCSE subject selection, students may choose two modern foreign languages, such as French, Spanish, or Chinese. However, one of these languages must be taken at native or first-language level.
Literature subjects include English Literature and World Literature, with A* rates of 25.7% and 23% respectively. These subjects are more subjective in nature and require students to develop their own perspectives and strong expressive skills, rather than simply reproducing content from textbooks.
Mathematics is a compulsory subject in the IGCSE curriculum, with an A rate of 24.3%. In addition to Mathematics, there is an elective subject called Additional Mathematics, which is more challenging than Mathematics. However, it has a higher A rate of 33.3%. If students have a strong interest in mathematics and wish to challenge themselves, Additional Mathematics can be a good choice.
Physics has the highest A* rate among the science subjects, at 33%. Physics requires students to master many formulas and calculation methods, but with a strong mathematics foundation, the concepts are generally easier to understand. Compared with Chemistry and Biology, Physics involves less memorization.
Chemistry has the lowest A* rate among the science subjects, at 30.6%. Chemistry involves a large number of concepts and details, requiring students to spend considerable time on memorization and understanding. If students do not particularly enjoy or excel at chemistry, they generally do not choose this subject.
